Kuala Lumpur (11 September 2015)– Malaysian Electronic Payment System Sdn Bhd (MEPS) Group Managing Director, Encik Zulkanain Kassim, was recipient of the prestigious “CEPI Asia Leadership Award – Individual” by Cards International and Electronic Payments International (CEPI), the leading global publications for the cards and payments sectors with a strong focus on Asia Pacific, in Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel, Singapore on 10 September 2015.

“I am truly humbled and honoured at receiving this reward,” confessed Zulkanain in his award acceptance speech. “I wish to thank the Board of Directors, management and staff of MEPS, along with the financial institutions who believed in my leadership and vision in propelling MEPS and the Malaysian industry forward to unprecedented levels.”

The “CEPI Asia Leadership Award – Individual” is a category under the 2015 Cards & Electronic Payments International (CEPI) Asia Awards that recognizes the individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement and success of the organization and the wider card and payments industry in his/her specific markets.

“A well-recognized figure in the Malaysian and regional payment space, Zulkanain Kassim has contributed to the development of Malaysia’s retail payments sector as Group Managing Director of the Malaysian Electronic Payment System (MEPS), Malaysia’s only interbank network service provider supporting the country’s domestic, developmental, Islamic and foreign banks,” said Ruben Kempeneer, Regional Director of Timetric at the awards presentation ceremony.

“Under his leadership, MEPS has been successful in implementing several market-firsts, significantly improving and modernizing Malaysia’s payments infrastructure, providing more payment capabilities and services for its market while driving the MEPS group to profitability and recognition, with MEPS being accorded as part of the Top 10 Favourite Superbrands in Malaysia during his term. Aside from his mandate with MEPS, Zulkanain is also a member of the Asian Payment Network and a Council Member of UnionPay Southeast Asia & South Pacific, and his profile extends outside of Malaysia being a sought-after speaker and advocator of e-payment innovation and reforms,” added Ruben.

Zulkanain started his career in the financial industry 23 years ago and held various key positions in major local and foreign financial institutions. He is currently a leading, recognized figure in the Malaysian and regional payment industry with a proven track record. He possesses the competency, knowledge, experience and passion to advance MEPS and the industry to the next level.

Among his noble accomplishments include leading MEPS back on track after divestment of the e-payment related services to MyClear in 2011, introducing Malaysia’s first non-bank White Label MEPS ATMs, implementing the new Malaysian Chip Card Specification and establishing a flanking modern cash management service that complements other service providers offering cash management services.

“Receiving the winner’s award will only inspire me to work harder and continue introducing new standards and changes that will bring about further transformation to the payment landscape,” added Zulkanain.

During the Awards ceremony, MEPS was announced “Highly Commended” for the “Best Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Payments Initiative” category under the CEPI Asia Payment Awards for its renowned ‘MEPS Instant Transfer’ – an e-payment service that facilitates real-time transfer of funds securely from a deposit account in one bank to a deposit account in another bank.
